Friends - No Smoking
In TWO where Carol gets married to Susan, Rachel is nervous about her mother coming to visit and accidentally brings her friends dirty, half-drank cups of coffee and Chandler says "I ordered the coffee with a cigarette floating in it" or something like that. In TOW Chandler takes up smoking, Gunther tells him he can't light up his cigarette in the coffee house. If you can't smoke in there, how did the cigarette butt get into the coffee cup?

Maybe Gunther told that guy he couldn't smoke in there and he put it out in his cup of coffee.

No no no, Chandler was being his sarcastic self and saying something like, "No, I don't want the one with lipstick on it, I want the one with the cigarette butt in it." He was making fun of her, and he probably wasn't thinking about whether you could smoke in there or not. There never was a cigarette butt in the cup.

I haven't seen this episode for ages, but maybe the tray came from outside anyway, since there are tables outside(like when Monica and chandler are waiting for phoebe to show up with the taxi before they go to the beach)

It has been known for people to smoke in non-smoking areas from time to time. Or maybe Gunther told Chandler to put out his fag in the non-smoking area of Central Perk??? Ha betcha didn't think of that!

Considering modern trends, I think that this could simply be explained as a change in restaurant policy between the two episodes.

sometimes people break the rules and may have lit up when they are not supposed to.
