When the wolf (Navarre) walks over the ice in the middle of the film he falls through the ice. Philipe, Isabeau and Imperius attempt to rescue the wolf by sliding over the ice on their bellies. Philipe runs Navarre's sword through the ice to tie a rope on it to save the wolf. You can see Philipe run the sword into the ice for only a few centimeters. The next moment you see the sword it is much deeper into the ice as when Philipe ran it into the ice.
