I do believe that string is there to keep the engine straight, for one side is heavier then the other, you could be right though.

You have to watch closely, but that string doesn't show up until AFTER the engine has been raised. Its what the Fuzzy Dice are connected to when they're tossed in.

I just watched this, and there is a wire which comes down from the ceiling. You can see it just before the engine is lowered in, and it looks like it is powering the fan.
