When our hero signs up as a trooper, he shakes the hand of some Officer. This Officer has a metal hand, and we are treated to a close up of the handshake. Therefore it's the Officer's own right hand that is missing.
Later, either as our hero is about to quit, or towards the end when 'Brain Bug' is caught, we see the same Officer with a good right hand and a metal left hand.
Ummm....you remember that there was a close-up of their handshake but you don't remember this guy had no legs? It's amazing how a man with no legs can possibly end up fighting in combat against the bugs. OMG pay attention.
Actually, in Heinlein's book(which the movie was based off of), the recruiting officer had detachable legs and arms. However, this is all over shadowed by the awful job Sony did with this film when compared to the book( which is more about philosophy and moral discussion than fighting.)
