Bambi - Who Poached Bambi's Mom?
In Bambi, the absolute saddest part for everyone who watches is of course when Bambi's mother gets killed. I always hated that part, then my husband pointed out something that really ticked me off... Right before Bambi's mom gets shot, she is teaching Bambi to be cautious at the edge of the meadow, she's alert, she's looking around and then they wander out into the meadow to eat SPRING GRASS (they specifically say SPRING GRASS)and then BLAM! She's shot. WHO POACHED BAMBI'S MOM? I'm sure gun season is different in other states, but on the east coast, gun hunting specifically is in the fall (usually 2 full weeks after Thanksgiving because of the Rutt - mating season, does are usually pregnant in the spring) and even people who hunt using crop permits don't hunt the fields until mid to late summer. Bambi's mom was poached illegally!! Big whoops...

If you read the original book (by Felix Salten, I recommend it highly), you learn that the hunter (He) is, in fact, written to be a poacher. So, not a slip up, but part of the plot. :)

Did it say what year the story was set? Maybe it was before limits were set on deer hunting.

Bambi was first published in 1928, and is based in Austria. (Heh, Bambi is a roe deer, not the white-tailed deer Disney turned him into for effect.) Try checking the hunting laws in Austria or Nazi Germany.
