Breakfast Club - What's Your Name?
During the scene where all the students get Bender's weed, and are running from the principal, they get stopped by a gate in the hallway. Claire gets mad and asks Andrew, "Why didn't you listen to John?" referring to John Bender. But, at this point in the movie, nobody is supposed to know Bender's first name. The principal referred to him as "Bender" in every scene prior to that!!!!!

Yes, that's true, but if you'll remember, earlier in the movie, Claire asked what his name was, and he never told her. Then he proceeded to make fun of HER name. That implies that she had no clue what his name was.

This may be a slip-up, but I think a more accurate presumption would be that Claire knew his name before they even got there. Even in very large schools people always seem to know the names of the BIG trouble makers and if he is as "bad" as the movie implies then he must have a quite notorious reputation; therefore she is quite likely to know his name. John may not have known Claire's name because he didn't really care and was not involved with the school and probably didn't even go very often.

That's true, but the nerdy kid, Brian, called him John earlier in the movie. I watched yesterday on TV and caught that.

Their detention spanned an entire day. What's John Hughes supposed to do, make an 8 hour movie? Pretend the movie is real: we don't see the kids' every move. So it's very likely that some things could've been said without us "being there". Get it?

Didn't you know the names of people in your schcool even if you didn't make it a point to talk or be their friend? I know I did....

they all heard his name when the principal said: "oh, you think he's funny? You go visit John Bender in five years, and you'll see how funny he is." but that WAS after the scene in the hall.

Maybe, Claire knew of him, but just didn't know him personally. I know people's names with faces, but I never hung out with them.

This was not a slip up, I was able to locate on-line a copy of the original script and in the original script he is called John. In the beginning of the movie the main person using Benders name was the principal. How many John's were in your high school? Makes perfect sense to me.
