When Harry and Lloyd arrive in Aspen Lloyd reads the name "Samsonite" from the briefcase without a problem! However when he reads the local newspaper in the hotel he can hardly read the word "The".
Also, after Lloyd is leaving the bar after finding out where Mary's house is, he see's a newspaper clipping on the wall and says "We landed a man on the moon". He read that with no problem.

OK. That is definitely not a slip-up. The fact that he can't read the word "the" is supposed to be funny! The director did that on purpose! Doesn't anyone see that it's supposed to be a joke? Lighten up!

I thought that this slip-up was a good catch by J.B.G. I'm sure a lot of people with reading problems do sometimes read bigger words easier than smaller ones, but trying to apply that concept to this movie is just a lame way of trying to justify the fact that there was yet another screw-up in the movie!

Well, I hate to break this to you, but it was meant to be funny when he can't pronounce "the." Dumb & Dumber is a comedy. Think about it, would it still be that funny if he pronounced "the" correctly? No, DIDN'T THINK SO!

Just as a smart person has more trouble with big words than small words, a dumb person would have more trouble with small words than big words. You are judging the difficulty of a word by a normal person's intelligence, but this is not what Lloyd follows now is it?

No, Vertigo, because he didn't know it was the brand..remember? He thought it was her last name!! So yes, he could've recognised the word, but not as a brand...

To vertigo2020: If someone ahs mentioned the quality of their "samsonite" suitcase before then he shouldn't confuse it thinking it was her last name! Does anyone agree?!

Erm.. i have a problem ,, you people seem to forget the main point that these people are supposed to be dumb, If some 1 gave you one word to read you whould get it as you read it , but some people like my self when reading out have problems when reading sentances ,, stammering , the inability to read forward and makeing a total git of yourself ,, these people are dumb they probably have the same learning dificulty i have ,when you have this problem reading out to some 1 is incredibly hard.

Umm... Lloyd IS a limo driver... so he's had a lot of experience with suitcases... someone had probably mentioned the quality of their "Samsonite" suitcase previously, which explains why Lloyd was able to read the brand name of the suitcase.
