In the final fight sequence a mig has gotten a lock on Iceman and is about to fire when Maverick tells him to "Bank Right Ice." The camera angle changes to an outside shot of Icemans plane which rolls to it's left in the shot.
That is the whole point. He told him to go off high right. He went off high left and that is why he flew right right into his jet wash causing the engine stall.
