Watch the part where LLcoolJ falls down the stairs. When he gets up he holds the right side of his head. Later, when one of the scientists asks him if he's sure the stairway is flooded, he points to the burns on the left side of his head.

He's not pointing at the cut/burn/whatever: he's pointing at his eyes, indicating that he saw it with his own eyes. Sorry.

You're right, though. On the DVD commentary track, the director talks about how the cut switched sides.
