In the scene where Richard Gere brings Julia Roberts to dinner with his business associates (the scene with the escargot) watch the sorbet dishes on the table. Whew! This film is a continuity nightmare!
Actually, in a course meal like that one was, the sorbet comes in the middle
of the meal to "cleanse the palate" so when the man left, Vivian & Edward would have to finish the rest of the meal by themselves.

In this same scene, Morse and his grandson leave the table before Vivian and Edward because they are upset. This is AFTER the sorbet (dessert) has been served. As he leaves, Morse says he hopes both of them enjoy their dinner, and he's sure it will be delicious. I know the guy is old, but he couldn't have ALREADY forgotten that he already ate with them.
