Evelyn has brought Ninny some fried green tomatoes for her birthday. They start speaking of death and Ninny is remembering when Ruth was dying of cancer. Ninny tells Evelyn that Ruth only had 2 weeks to live so they put her in the "downstairs" bedroom of the Threadgoode home so she'd be comfortable. Next scene, Ruth is actually dying in the "upstairs" bedroom. Idgie is in the room as well looking "down" at Buddy Jr. playing ball outside.
