In the talking dog episode, when Andy discovers Tommy and Opie have planted a walkie-talkie in "spots" collar, Goober has a pencil and plenty of pens in his pocket. Later when they trick the boys about the bogus pony Goober tells them he didn't have a pencil handy to write the phone number dow. His shirt pocket still has the same pencil and pens in it.
