Before the destroyer Ward attacks the Japanese submarine, there is a scene of the submarine's conning tower above water. It has a curious looking battle damage notch in the front of it, before it has even be shot at. The next scene shows the conning tower without the damage, just as a shell from the Ward hits it and causes the damage that we saw in the very first scene.
