After Andy's escape, Red (the narrator) is describing how Andy got away and how the authorities are searching for him. He explains how all they found of Andy was a pile of muddy clothes and the rock hammer "worn to a nub". As he describes this, you see a guy holding up the hammer they found for the press picture. The hammer looks far from worn, in fact it looks almost new.
