As the Martians are rampaging through Europe, the "last wirephoto from Paris" shows the Eiffel Tower having its top neatly sheared off by a heat-ray. Then, at the end of the movie, we see a series of pictures of humans rebuilding their shattered world. One of the pictures shows the Eiffel Tower, badly damaged, leaning to one side--but with its top still on!
