Hunt for Red October, The - Underwater Canyon Not Named
Ryan is on board the Uss Dallas and wants to talk to Ramius to warn him that the rest of the Russian fleet are after him and also that he will be fired upon if he approaches the US coast. He wants to rendezvous with him in an underwater canyon. He starts to write a message to be translated to morse to be sent by periscope flashes. He writes the first part, then goes off to find the name of the canyon on a chart. He finds the name and has the message sent without first adding the name in.

Ryan being a former marine, would not have send a name, it would have been longitude and latitude.

He doesn't enter anything further in the message,be it a name or longitudinal/latitudinal markers. He just sends the message which says he wants to meet "somewhere deep". Furthermore, he doesn't consult the edges of the map to get any such markers.

Well, both commentators are correct. If you look on the map, it says "Laurentian Abyssal". In the message he give the course as "due south". As referenced as a deep place, Ramius would look for the closest spot. And if you look on his map, again, "Laurentian Abyssal" is referenced.
