Comedic affect. Bender carries more stuff in his middle than Mary Poppins does in her bag. There are more problems with Benders fever anyways, with a 900 degree temperature, the couch catches on fire, and yet the Professor can protect his hand with just his lab coat, and if it caught the couch on fire, shouldnt the floor have melted? Again, comedic affect.

The professor could probably protect his hand with his lab coat because its a LAB COAT, lab coats are probably super fire-protective to protect from burns from expiriments gone wrong in the future.
