Go to the part where Josh is contemplating trying out for the team. We see Buddy grab at the basketball. Look closely. We can see that when he bites down on it, the ball is flat. But when Josh tosses it away saying "here, you can play", the ball bounces high before Buddy makes the basket. Obviously the ball is not flat.

Was it magically pumped up in mid-air before Buddy shot it?
