Actually you are wrong. The Javelin IS AN ANTI-TANK WEAPON. The concept of the javelin is to shoot high in the air than hit the target from above-which is not as heavily armored as the sides or front. Get it - JAVELIN. Those ARMY guys are pretty creative with names.
I can assure everyone that the Javelin is an anti-tank weapon. I am an anti-tank assaultman in the Marine Corps. The Javelin is my job everyday, and I'm quite sure it is designed to destroy tanks, although it is quite able to destroy hovering helicopter but not fast aircraft.
None of the comments here are accurate. Javelin has been used for two separate missile systems. The first was built by Shorts, Belfast and is the second generation SAM following the Blowpipe. It Command to Line of Sight operated. Alliant also build a missile called Javelin which is an Anti Tank, programmable Infra red , fire and forget seeker head on an Anti Tank missile
