The police are tracking the movement of the characters to the east on their wall map and predicting that they will turn South. When the treasure hunters come to the intersection they turn left rather than right. I believe that sends a person North rather than South. In the mean time there's excitement back at the station as the police celebrate their "correct" direction and begin plotting the next turn.
