Frank and Margaret are in her tent after Hawkeye and Trapper had sabotaged it. The put a fake candle, cut the middle support post and put pudding on the pillow. If you look you will notice that there is no pudding prior to Margaret's complaint.
I'm fairly sure that she said 'in the pillow', in which case the pudding would only be visible after she put her hand on the pillow and it squeezed out of the fabric.

There was pudding inside the pillow so that when she laid her head on it, her hair would get pudding all in it, but she ruined their plans for that by putting her hand on the pillow instead. Of course it was not visible before, because if she had seen it the prank would have been ruined.
