Maximus rides a horse from Germany, where the first battle occurs, to Spain, where his family lives. He was wounded in battle in Germany, yet when he gets to Spain, he's still bleeding. Now, I don't know how long it takes to ride a horse from Germany to Spain, but I know it takes long enough either for the wound to have stopped bleeding, or for Maximus to have bled to death.
