Star Wars Episode 6: Return of the Jedi - Threepio Gets Confused
Listen to C3PO and R2D2 just after the start of the film, when they are walking through the canyon towards Jabba's palace. Threepio tells Artoo that "Lando Calrissian and poor Chewbacca" never returned from the palace. Which is a little funny, considering Chewbacca doesn't arrive at the palace with Leia until ten minutes later. Somebody check the script please!

c3po and artoo have been with luke and may not have known about leia's plan possiably because their memmories would be easy to check

Both the droids have no idea about the plans to save Han. perhaps the droids were told that Chewie went to save Han, therefore never returning and them being sent to the palace. They don't know wether he got to the palace or not. they only assume, hence the genuine (??) surprise when Chewie is brough in by the bounty hunter.

You're confused. Chewbacca was already there before Leia showed up. At the very end of Empire Strikes Back, you see both Lando and Chewbacca saying goodbye to Luke and Leia, then leaving for Tatooine to find Han. Later on, after Lando and Chewbacca find where Han is being held they contact Luke and Leia and devise a plan for freeing him. Lando disguises himself and stays at the palace. Chewbacca waits out at in the Millennium Falcon waiting for Luke and Leia to arrive.

What do you mean both droids have no idea about the plan? Doesn't R2D2 have Luke's lightsaber in his Chasse? Doesn't he have the *recording* from Luke? Only C3P0 is shocked. R2 would have been there to record the message. Also, R2 is in proper position to shoot the lightsaber over to Luke at the right time. This was all planned. R2 knew all about the plan.

I think i can explain, with a little help from the book "Shadows of the Empire". After Lando and Chewie had left to find Han Luke and Leia headed to Tatooine to meet them, tatooine being the obvious place to look. But, something was keeping Fett and lando and chewie went to tatooine without finding him. Leia went with lando and chewie to Rodia to enlist black suns(a HUGE criminal organiseation). All things merged and they were tricked while luke teamed up with Dash Rendar to get the death star plans. Leia failed to get any info about fett, so they just waited on tatooine for him to show, during this time luke recorded the message and gave artoo his new lightsaber. They decided that as 3PO was a concientous objector(you know, a coward) it was best they kept everything secret from him as he might have accidently told jabba everything without realizing

Since I originally added this slip-up, I think Shadows of The Empire and other literature about the time period between the end of Empire and start of Jedi has kind of cleared this up. I still think maybe R2 knew about the plan but C3-PO didn't, that's why *he* thinks Chewbacca's already at the palace.

Well, I only hold the movies as actual lineage, so I don't care.

I agree w/ Kodiak. And look, when Luke salutes just before he jumps in, that's his cue to R2 to get ready w/ the lightsaber. There was obviously a lot of planning between R2 and Luke.

Oh, on the topic of Shadows of the Empire, which takes place between Empire and Jedi, Han is talking to Dash, but he should still be frozen!

Sorry guys, but Threepio never said "Lando Calrissian and poor Chewbacca never left the palace". He actually said "This Place", meaning Tatooine. If you turn up the volume, even on the original VHS from 1981, that's what he actually says. Too, read the original book from Del Rey.

R2-D2 knew about the plan. C-3PO did not know about the plan. You may recall that in the beginning of ROTJ C-3PO accuses R2-D2 of playing the wrong message when the message says that the two droids are gifts. we don't know exactly what 3PO thought was going on but its not what was actually happening.
