Watch the scene where Indy and the bad guy are on the swing bridge near the end of the movie. When Indy cuts the bridge and he and the bad guy are haning from it, you can clearly see the cables holding the on from several different angles.

This is a pretty old movie so they didn't have the same special effects as today.

the part with the bad guys falling off of it, first off, they were all dummies- and second, that was a real bridge that, with the help of technicians, broke apart. there weren't any extra cables or anything- if you watch the dvd, you learn how engineers created the bridge for them and they only had one lucky chance to rip it apart and so on.
