It's most likely becuase he always had the hand. He probably didn't loose the hand, he was just hiding it in his coat sleeve so that only the hook could be seen. Who knows. I've only seen it once.

If you are talking about the shower room scene, that is because it is a dream, see the beginning of the sequal

Uhm...no...it wasn't a dream, it really happened, in the sequal she's having a nightmare about it, cuz it happened, cuz like if something bad happened to you-say you get stuck in a burning house only to be rescued minutes before it explodes (far-fetched I know, but who cares?), wouldn't you have nightmares about it later in life? I think so. There ya go

no, it was actually a dream. after she has the nightmare in the classroom, she tells her friend and they say, the shower one again? so it was a dream.

There is never any mention of the hook being his real hand. The urban myth they talk about say that the murderer has a hook for a hand, but we never get told that Ben Willis lost his hand. So thats why...

Just to add to the comment as well. Its not only at the end in the bathroom you see his hand, but it is when he gets on the boat with her and there is the big chase between Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ben Willis (whatever his real name is!).. so as i say, its because he uses the hook A)because they were talking about the urban myth and B)because he is a fisherman and the production team thought it would be a good prop to use to fit in with the story!

First of all, I don't ever recall that he gets his hand chopped off?? But I might be wrong because I remember in one of them like at the end that he is on the boat and he gets it chopped off then if I am not mistaken but never before that. And yes it was a dream.

OK it was a dream because if it really happened she most likely wouldn't have survived! He got his hand cut off at the end of the movie...in the beginning when he first kills the fisherman he grabs the hook and it has a handle..so...he has to hold on to the handle in order to use it, therefore he had a hand until the end..AND YES IT WAS A DREAM!

Okay, since people here obviously saw about ten minutes of the movie I'm gonna lay it out for you, and keep in mind I saw this movie YEARS AGO and still know what happened. 1. Ben Willis has a hand through the whole movie. He picks up a fisherman's hook and uses it to kill Julie's friend Max near the beginning. He keeps the hook and uses it as his main weapon from then on. (this is in reference to the old urban legend everyone has heard) He is wearing a rain slicker with long sleeves for the majority of the movie so it looks like his hand isn't there but it clearly shows him holding it on several occasions. 2. At the end of the movie when Ben is on the boat with Julie and then fights with Ray, Ben's hand gets caught on a chain. It pulls him up and when he reaches the top his hand is snapped off and he falls into the water (I think the fact that he's now missing a hand is mentioned in the scene with the cop a bit later). So at this point he has one hand. 3. The final bathroom scene isn't specifically stated to be a dream (because wouldn't it be stupid if her friend asked 'the same bathroom dream like in the last movie?') but it's obvious that it is one or else she would definitely be dead. Even if it weren't a dream and she had somehow gotten away she was in a dorm room and there would be many other people around and he would have been caught. In summary, Ben has a hand. Ben looses his hand at the END. The final bathroom scene is a dream.
