Wizard of Oz, The - Fix It Later
Go to the part where the scarecrow, tin man, and Dorothy are starting to do the little dance down the yellow brick road to change to the next scene. If u look way back in the forest in front of them you could see someone walking on the set in a white t-shirt. It looks like he was fixing something...why didn't they just wait for him to be done? Didn't he know they were filming..OOPS!?!

I heard this legend too. But I'm almost posative it is true. They did a documentary on the movie on TCM. Every time they play Wizard of Oz they show the documentary. Watch it next time. They talk about how the actor was a munchkin and just (for some reason) hung himself. I have heard this ever since I saw the movie for the first time.

That isn't a person. It's some type of large bird. I think it's a crane. It is bending over the entire scene with the Tin Man, then as they are leaving down the yellow brick road, the bird flaps it's wings.

Look again, it might just be a bird flapping its white wings, there are quite a few birds in this scene on loan from a local zoo.

Boy I love to hate this scene. It is one of the great Urban Legends of all time that a man (be he stage-hand or munchkin) actually jumped from one of the trees and hung himself. On-stage. In-frame. During a song-and-dance routine. It's completely impossible. The physics and distance needed are completely off, even for a "Munchkin". For a big debate over this scene, one could check out eeggs.com and see what you find out. Many people speack to the contrary, but I stand my ground. Would the shot have been printed had a person died in the background? Wouldn't Mr. Meyer have had to do something about it? The truth is that everyone has a family, and MGM couldn't pay off everyone to keep quiet about it. Is it a bird? Who knows. Is it a giraffe? Hard to say. Is it a wayward stage-hand? Perhaps. Is he drunk? Could be. Is he hanging himself? Impossible. That is all I have to say on that one.

Alright, I have always wondered about this "urban legend" and just saw it for the first time. You can clearly see the bird (yes, it is a bird) in the background while everyone is walking down the road, standing next to a tree. Then the bird flaps its wings, which are white with black tips. The birds' left wing is what people must mistake for a hanging person, which actually does look pretty convincing. However, that is just the black tip of the wing. What assured me that this is a bird, though, is that you can also see the birds' RIGHT wing flap at the exact same time. Also remember that as they were walking down the road, they were getting very close to the hanging backdrop. If that "thing" is really a person, I think they would have to be about one or two feet tall. But I did see the weird movement just to the right of the house. Does anyone know what that could be??

There is no stage hand on set at the end of the Tinman sequence, nor was anyone hanged, nor did they fall out of a tree. The shadowy figure at the back of the set as Dorothy, Scarecrow and Tinman set off down the Yellow Brick Road is a large bird stretching its wings.

It's a BIRD......and that's all!!! You see the same bird close up while tin man is singing, look behind him by the little tin woodsman house.....Let's put this to rest.
