When Preston is getting chased by the bad guys, he traps the one in that big red steel ball. Then he goes and gets his racecar and starts pushing him in the ball. As he's pushing him in the ball down the track, you can clearly see a steel loop holding the ball in front of the car. I don't think Preston would have had enough time to put it on himself. Oops!!
