It's clearly indicated that the entire time span of the whole movie is one week. Maude comments to Harold when they meet that she'll be eighty next week. Between then and the birthday scene there is a wide array of weather changes. First it is winter, with everyone in scarves, gloves, ect. Then you have Harold and his mother in the backyard swimming pool. Then we are back to winter and by the end everyone is in fall attire!
