OK, during the "confession" at the end of the movie when William is being "racked" and pulled apart, look at his shoes when he comes down. When you look at his laces you can see they are strung through the very same plastic rings we have in our shoes today. I understand that shoes were laced back then, but I don't think they worried too much about trying to invent that little plastic ring to prevent the hole from taring.
