when Doolittle calls Rafe and Danny into his office he begins to scold them because they were not flying in uniform but then congratulates them for together destroying 7 planes, but if you count the planes in the scene before they take down 8 planes.
They shot down 7. Rafe and Danny played chicken and had 4 crash into each other then they shot down 3. Then Earl and his group shot one down at the tower.
