About halfway through the movie, Chris O'Donnell gets out his stove and starts to melt snow for water. Instead of grabbing some snow from the ground, he gets some from a zip-lock bag he carried with him. Nothing beats home-grown snow!

So what? That snow was probably from the camp site and was clean. The snow up the mountain may have been dirty or contaminated.
