Dragonball Z - That's One Bad Case of "Pink-Eye"

Piccolo explains to Gohan that he and Krillin were never infected with the black water mist, because the mist never had any effect on Piccolo when he was bitten. Then, why did they have those creepy pink eyes if they were never infected?? Krillin had those eyes too, but he didn't get bitten or anything... So, explain.
