On page 237 of the paperback edition, The Arch-chancellor is looking at the ant 'computer' later called Hex. He puts in a card with 2X2 on it and gets the answer 4. He then talks to Ponder and says that he knew that 2+2 is four, but the machine worked out 2X2, (Same answer but different question).
