In the scene where Kirk and crew plus Gillian are looking for the whales in the open sea Uhura finally makes contact with the whales, notice Gillian is sitting right next to Uhura. When Uhura advises that she has something closing in on the whales Kirk states, "put them on screen" watch Gillian, her mouth moves as if to say, "how can you do that?" But nothing is actually heard. Then seconds later you hear the words "How can you do that?"
