In real life the Secret Service was not invented until the time when Theodore Roosevelt was in office.

No, the Secret service goes back to 1865. Ironically, Lincoln created the service on the same day he was assassinated. The SS started work July 5, 1865. The SS was, and is, a branch of the Treasury, so they handled counterfeiting cases. During the Civil War, as much as a third of the money circulating was counterfeit. After McKinley was killed in 1901, Congress added the job of protecting the President to their duties.

...and General Grant had become President by the time the movie takes place. Coincidently enough, he is referred to as the President throughout the movie. :)
