Lady Jane Grey was the 'Nine Days' Queen' of England in July 1553. As a descendant of Henry VII's younger daughter Mary, she had some claim to the English throne, and her father-in-law, the Duke of Northumberland, persuaded Edward VI to name her as his successor. Mary I ousted her easily, and she was beheaded after her father had incriminated her further by participating in Wyatt's Rebellion. (Oxford Paperback Encyclopedia, © Oxford University Press 1998)
