Star Trek: The Next Generation - Wrong Color
Everyone knows Data wears a yellow uniform, but not everyone knows that he shouldn't. Yellow is for security and engineering. True, Data does a lot of work in engineering, but thats not his main duty on board the Enterprise. He is second officer and chief science officer. Science officers wear blue, and especially since he's chief science officer, he should have a blue uniform. But personally, I think he'd look bad in blue.

Data is not the chief science officer. He is the chief operations officer, and operations officers wear gold uniforms just like engineering and security officers.

Data wears yellow because he is always seen at the ops console. That is his “primary function”. Red is for command and navigation, yellow for engineering, security, and ops, blue for science and medical.

This is a site about nit-picking and detail, so let's get a little detail about Mr. Data. He is indeed the Science Officer aboard the Enterprises D and E. His 'primary' function, however is as Chief of Operations (the word 'chief' in this instance being a title, not a rank designation). Starfleet assigns department colors according to the person's 'primary' duty, regardless of any secondary or tertiary responsibilities. And an Operations Chief is a member of the 'services' segment of starship personnel. Remember: red/cranberry = command, blue (all color variants) = science/medical, and gold = support services (including engineering & security). Now, if you want to get really technical, count the number of times Data should be in a red uniform and he's not. For reference, review the episodes where Picard is not in command for some reason, and Riker (as captain) has a yellow-shirted Data for a First Officer.

It doesn't matter if the websites call him the science officer. On the show, Data is always called the Chief of Operations.

Well I did go to the character bio on www.startrek.com and it did say that he was the chief science officer, "Current assignment: Second officer/science officer, U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701/E" but it also had this "2364 -- Named as operations officer and second officer on U.S.S. Enterprise, under Capt. Jean-Luc Picard" on his career summary. Maybe there's confusion about what Data's exact job really is, perhaps that's the real slip-up.

Not to mention that Harry Kim on Voyager is also wearing a yellow suit. Yes, as said before, Engineering, Security, and Operations have yellow suits.

Data is the Chief Science Officer, it says so at startrek.com, go there and see. Here are some instructions: Go to www.startrek.com, click on library, click on character bios, click on D, the scroll down and click on Data.

Okay, I think this is why they changed uniforms after Star Trek: Generations. With the new uniforms, it won't matter. All that is different is the pips that you have on your collar.

Data is the science officer, not ops, so he should be a blue shirt, but I agree, he'll sure look funny in blue. You can look for yourself at: http://www.startrek.com/library/individ.asp?ID=112457, or just go to the home page, click on library, click on character bios, and click on Data. It says something like this: Current assignment: Second officer/science officer, U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701/E.
