I'm pretty sure that they both have revolvers. Starling hears Gumb c*ck the hammer on his so she whirls around and shoots him and when Gumb is dying on the ground and light has been let into the room, we see Starling sitting on the ground trying to reload hers quickly.

Android is right. She did have a revolver. Remember when she went to Memphis to see Dr. Lecter when they had him in that cage like cell in the middle of the room, she had to check her revolver with the 2 policemen and she handed him her revolver and her speedloader.

It's been a few months since I saw Silence of the Lambs, but I'm pretty sure they don't use revolvers. Starling and Jame Gumb both have semi-automatic pistols, as I remember it.
